The monastery is located above an underground prison where, according to legend, the Armenian King Tiridates III kept St. Gregory the Illuminator imprisoned for 13 years before being converted to Christianity by him around the traditional date of 301 AD. All of Armenia was converted to Christianity in 301 AD, thus becoming the first country to adopt Christianity as its state religion. The monastery served as the spiritual center of the Armenian Apostolic Church, where the residence of the Catholicos of All Armenians was located.
Noravank was founded in 1205 by Bishop Hovhannes, the former abbot of the Vahanavank monastery. The monastic complex includes the Surb Karapet Church (Saint John the Baptist), the Surb Grigor Chapel (Saint Gregory) with a vaulted hall, and the Surb Astvatsatsin Church (Holy Mother of God). Noravank was also the residence of the Armenian Orbelian princes. At the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th centuries, the architect Siranes and the outstanding sculptor and miniaturist Momik worked here. The fortress walls of the monastery were built in the 17th–18th centuries.
The 18-meter-high waterfall is located in the Syunik region, north of the city of Sisian. The waterfall's location abounds with gorges featuring steep slopes and rock niches, as well as deep grottos. Traces of human existence dating back to the Old Stone Age have been found in them. The Shaki River, on which the waterfall is formed, flows into the Vorotan and is only 18 km long.
The Wings of Tatev is the longest passenger cableway in the world, with a length of almost 6 km. It is also the longest non-stop double-track cable car in the world, as confirmed by the Guinness World Records. The aerial journey to the monastery takes about 12 minutes. When the first passenger cabin completes its 'flight' at the 'Tatev' station, the second arrives at the 'Halidzor' station, and after the 'Wings' are reloaded, movement in the opposite direction begins. Flying over the gorge, the cabins reach a maximum height of 320 meters.
Founded in 895–906 by the suzerain of Syunik, Ashot, and his wife Shushan. The monastery was one of the most important centers of science and enlightenment in medieval Armenia. Despite the destruction of a significant number of Armenian monasteries by the Central Asian conqueror Tamerlane in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, Tatev retained its status as a major feudal center. In 1373, Hovhannes Vorotnetsi founded the Tatev University within the monastery, which remained the only functioning university in Eastern Armenia for half a century.
